2007-07-18, 6:17 p.m.: I recently realized that Araby tells the story of my life. Or does it tell the story of everyone's life? "Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger." Also, my new t-shirt motto is Sasha Cohen's quote from a few skating seasons ago: It can't all be churros at Disneyland. Hallelujah. (Hallelujah added.) How much do I love Spanish? Oh so much. Me encanta. And even more ever since Ruth reminded me how the numbers work in French - all that 'dix-neuf-cent, quatre-vingt seize' stuff. How crazy is a language in which you have to say 4x20 to say 80? Not to knock French or the French, however. I'm thinking of studying Comparative Literature now, here at CU: German, French, Spanish. But that would be for a year from now. Right now I'm all tangled up in which Spanish class to take in the fall and will have about four weeks to learn the 2nd semester by myself, i.e. to finish the textbook. My class goes up to chapter 7 only - we are barely getting through the preterite - and there are at least 7 more to go. If I want to do all of second-year Spanish in one semester, it will mean going every day again. For four months. Tra la la, how dull this all is to anyone but me. But do I want to teach German, French OR Spanish literature? No. Ueberhaupt nicht. So what the hell am I doing? It can't all be churros at Disneyland. 2 1/2 days to Harry Potter ...
